the hangzhou water treatment technology development center recently won a bid for a 150,000-ton-per-day seawater desalination project in the middle east. the first phase involves 50,000 tons in daily capacity and is now under design. the project is for a steel plant in the persian gulf that is expected to become the second largest in the area.
the water center got wind of the project at an international exhibition in europe at the end of 2013, and immediately sent experts to communicate with the steel company, which was deeply impressed, paving the way for the water center to get the order. the technical team with the center worked full steam ahead to formulate the project plan, processing design and quoted price.
the project will face red tide problems because of its location in coastal areas. the water center's technical team paid a field visit to study the local sea water quality and projects near the plant. the team made bold optimized adjustments of process design based on collected data and problems, while communicating with the steel plant on modifications. although the design was complex, it successfully resolved a series of difficult problems, such as difficult sediment during red tide. the system features high filter fineness, automation and stability. it was proposed to replace the original pre-treatment system, which would not only reduce work load in civil construction but also simplify installation and save costs.
the water center's technical team overcame language barriers and negotiated with the proprietor. the optimized plan finally won approval from the proprietor and landed the contract on february 14.
"the project is an important milestone for the water center. it not only marks that the center's seawater desalination equipment has made inroads into the middle east but also serves as an overseas demonstration project," said the marketing director of the water center.
"our advanced seawater desalination ideas and extraordinary project management and experience have brought more overseas opportunities to the center, and many desalination projects are under negotiation at the moment."
to date, the water center has established desalination projects in indonesia, pakistan, saudi arabia, the philippines and tunisia. it will continue to accelerate the pace of overseas development in the future.
